This is a classic short term pain for long term gain. Mayor Bill Peduto says the transformation of the old Produce Terminal is inspiring. “We’re not tearing it down. We’re going to polish her up. We’re going to give her a brand new use. And this building will be the lifeblood of the regeneration and rejuvenation all along the Allegheny River,” the mayor said. “There are very few places that are more Pittsburgh than the terminal building. Two 20-story rental apartment towers opened last month facing Lincoln Avenue, on the west side of a site that formerly held Children’s Memorial Hospital. The Orchard’s smaller size and frontage on Orchard Street, a quieter, more residential-scaled street than Lincoln, were designed “to make a comfortable, elegant fit” with that side of the old hospital site, McCaffery Interests’ Dan McCaffery told Crain’s.
